Geocaching in and around Andrews

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a cache anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and share the cache’s existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can try to locate the cache.

Geocaching is a family sport. Many families spend weekends with their GPS units in hand, roaming scenic areas looking for caches. A cache can contain anything from a simple log book, where the finder signs in, then replaces the log book and cache for the next seeker, to items the finder can keep. There is a sort of unwritten rule that if you take something, you have to leave something. Like camping, geocaching has its own set of ettiquette rules, and most people abide by them. Geocaching is one way to remain a kid forever. You never get too old to enjoy a good treasure hunt!

Chautauqua AVÉ is sponsoring a special, one day, geocaching event. On October 12th, at 12:30 pm, geocachers should gather at the Andrews Chamber of Commerce, located in the old railroad station. This is when the coordinates for the various caches will be announced. Geocachers will have the afternoon to hunt, and should gather back at the Chamber at 4 pm for refreshments and distribution of prizes.

Caches will have varying levels of difficulties. There is no charge for this event. Just come, join the fun, and see some of the most beautiful terrain on this earth. Take away a smile and a desire to come back to our beautiful mountains.
