Asheville native Richard D. Starnes is Creighton Sossomon Associate Professor of History, Department Head, and Senior Research Associate, Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University. He is the author of Creating the Land of the Sky: Tourism and Society in Western North Carolina (University of Alabama Press, 2005) and editor of Southern Journeys: Tourism, History, and Culture in the Modern South (University of Alabama Press, 2003).
Dr. Starnes holds a Ph.D. in history from Auburn University. He is nearing completion of a biography of nineteenth century North Carolina political leader William Alexander Graham (coauthored with Max R. Williams) and has plans to write the first comprehensive scholarly treatment of Reconstruction in North Carolina in nearly a century.
