If Adversity Breeds Character, What Does the Lack of Energy Do?

Gas prices are up- and rising rapidly. Diesel fuel is even more costly for truckers, which increases comsumer costs for products and food. What about home heating fuels for this winter, especially for those who need it, but can't afford it? What are some of the viable alternatives we can reasonably live with and develop?
