Hal Herzog earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Tennessee. For over 20 years he has studied the psychology of our attitudes toward and relationships with the species with whom we share our world. His publications include articles on the illicit culture of cockfighting in Southern Appalachia, the psychology of animal activism, moral quandaries faced by veterinary students, sex differences in attitudes toward animals, and how animal ethics committees make their decisions. He is currently investigating the role of intuition in human moral decisions about animals and the shifts in the popularity of dog breeds in American culture.
